Born Jean Poiré in Paris, France. Actor and screenwriter who entered French film in 1950 (BRUNE OU BLONDE). Notable screen appearances include LE DERNIER MÉTRO / THE LAST METRO (1980) and the TV series "Les dossiers secrets de l'Inspecteur Lavardin" (1988) and its TV-movie spin-off (1990). His play La cage aux folles was adapted to the screen in 1978, and he collaborated on the screenplay for its sequel (1980). He wrote the screenplay and directed 1992's LE ZÈBRE / THE ODDBALL.
