Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Tootsie (1982)
Born in Richard M. Richards in New York City. Trained and employed by the US Army as a photojournalist, he later worked as a photographer for Life, Look, Time, Esquire, and other magazines, winning numerous awards for news and commercial still photography before turning to films in the early 70s. The most interesting of his scattered directorial output (7 films from 1972 through 1987) is FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (1975), a taut, brooding, well-crafted third screen version of the Raymond Chandler novel. He wrote and directed THE CULPEPPER CATTLE CO. (1972), and he wrote, directed and co-produced MARCH OR DIE (1977). He co-produced the popular TOOTSIE (1982) with director Sydney Pollack.
