Born John Michael Riva; grandson of Marlene Dietrich and son of Emmy®-nominated actress and Dietrich biographer Maria Riva (b. 1924). Art director and production designer who entered American film in 1976 (ILSA, HAREM KEEPER OF THE OIL SHEIKS, art director). Other notable production design credits include I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN (uncredited) and BARE KNUCKLES (both 1977), BRUBAKER and ORDINARY PEOPLE (art director) 9both 1980), HALLOWEEN II (1981), BAD BOYS and STRANGERS KISS (both 1983), THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION (1984), GOONIES, THE COLOR PURPLE and THE SLUGGER'S WIFE (all 1985), THE GOLDEN CHILD (1986), LETHAL WEAPON (1987), SCROOGED (1988), LETHAL WEAPON 2 and TANGO & CASH (both 1989), RADIO FLYER and A FEW GOOD MEN (both 1992), DAVE (1993), NORTH (1994), CONGO (1995), HARD RAIN, SIX DAYS SEVEN NIGHTS and LETHAL WEAPON 4 (all 1998), CHARLIE'S ANGELS (2000), EVOLUTION (2001), CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE (2003), STEALTH and ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE (both 2005), THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS (2006), SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007) and IRON MAN (scheduled for 2008).

Riva was production designer for the telecasts of the 74TH (2002) and 79TH (2007) Academy Awards ceremonies. He was briefly engaged to actress Jamie Lee Curtis during the 1980s. Married to assistant art director (and granddaughter of songwriter Harry Warren) Wendy Mickell.
