Educated at Barnard College and Columbia University. In 1995, she joined the faculty of Columbia to teach screenwritiing in the School of the Arts after a career in television journalism with Don Hewitt at "60 Minutes" and Bill Moyers at PBS. She learned screenwriting from director John Huston. She wrote the screenplay for PRIZZI'S HONOR, for which she was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar®, but said the film she regarded as a high achievement was the PBS documentary "That's No Tomato, That's a Work of Art."
Other writing credits (alone or in collaboration) include MR. NORTH (1988 - screenplay), WHEN WOMEN KILL (1994), "The Three Stooges" (2000 - TV movie) and "A Nero Wolfe Mystery" (2001 - TV series "Over My Dead Body: Parts I & II").
