Born in Biloxi, MS; educated at RADA, London, and AADA, New York. Talented, stage-trained lead who made an auspicious feature debut in the title role of KING OF THE GYPSIES (1978). Roberts has given generally fine performances in films of uneven quality; he was memorable in RAGGEDY MAN (1981), opposite Sissy Spacek, THE COCA-COLA KID (1985), directed by Dusan Makavejev, and RUNAWAY TRAIN (1985), co-starring Jon Voight and directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.
Very busy in film and television from the mid-1990s to the present time, Roberts' other notable credits include MISS LONELYHEARTS and STAR 80 (both 1983), THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE (1984), NOBODY'S FOOL (1986), LONELY HEARTS (1991), FINAL ANALYSIS (1992), "In Cold Blood" (1996, TV), CECIL B. DEMENTED (2000), MINDSTORM (2001), THE LONG RIDE HOME and NATIONAL SECURITY (both 2003), BREAK A LEG (2005), HOLLYWOOD DREAMS, A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS, DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE and AURORA (all 2006), THE BUTCHER, WESTBRICK MURDERS and DARK HONEYMOON (all 2007), 4-BIDDEN, KINGSHIGHWAY, WITLESS PROTECTION, ROYAL KILL, THE SPY AND THE SPARROW and THE DARK KNIGHT (all scheduled for 2008). Brother of actresses Julia Roberts (b. 1967) and Lisa Roberts Gillan (b. 1965) and son of Walter Roberts, who founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in 1963. Since 1992, he has been married to actress Eliza (Garrett) Roberts.
