Howard E. Rollins Jr.

Born in Baltimore, MD; educated at Towson State College, Baltimore. Commanding black actor who came to prominence as Coalhouse Walker, Jr., in Milos Forman's adaptation of the E.L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME (1981). Rollins was also memorable in Norman Jewison's tightly wound drama, A SOLDIER'S STORY (1984), and earned widespread recognition for his role in the TV series, "In the Heat of the Night" (1988-1994). Having battled substance abuse problems for many years, he died from complications from lymphoma in 1996.

Other notable film and TV credits include "King" (1978, TV mini-series as Andrew Young), "Roots: The Next Generations" (1979 TV mini-series), "For Us the Living: The Medgar Evers Story" (1983, TV in the title role), THE HOUSE OF GOD (1984), ON THE BLOCK (1990) and DRUNKS (1995).
