Born Shirley Kingdon in England, UK. Costume designer who entered British film in 1957 with Ken Russell's AMELIA AND THE ANGEL. (They were married from 1956 until 1979.) She designed costumes for several of Russell's subsequent films, including FRENCH DRESSING (1964), WOMEN IN LOVE (1969), THE MUSIC LOVERS (1970), THE DEVILS and THE BOY FRIEND (both 1971), SAVAGE MESSIAH (1972), MAHLER (1974), TOMMY and LISZTOMANIA (both 1975), and VALENTINO (1977).
Her work for other directors includes BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN (1967), THE BOYS IN THE BAND (1970), THE LITTLE PRINCE (1974), INSERTS (1975), YANKS (1979), LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER (1981), GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES and THE RAZOR'S EDGE (both 1984), THE BRIDE (1985), HOPE AND GLORY (1987), I DREAMED OF AFRICA (2000), ENIGMA (2001) and "Shackleton" (2002, TV). She had five children while married to Russell; son Xavier Russell is a film editor, and daughter Victoria Russell is a costume designer.
