Co-founded Florentine Films in 1976 with Ken Burns and Buddy Squires. Among the many awards he's received for his documentary films are a Peabody Award, an Emmy® Award, an Academy Award® nomination and two CableAce Award nominations. He has made films on social issues, the environment, history and art. His recent "Richard Rodgers: The Sweetest Sounds" on PBS (2001), produceed by American Masters, received wonderful reviews. One critic wrote, "As memorable and moving as any musical drama you will see and hear anywhere, Broadway included." His previous American Masters program, "Alexander Calder" (1998), was called "an American masterpiece" by Charlie Rose. It won a Peabody and an Emmy.
Sherman's other most notable contributions include BROOKLYN BRIDGE (1981), THE GARDEN OF EDEN (1984), "Don't Divorce the Children" (1989), "Robert F. Kennedy: The Man and the Memories" (1993, TV), "The O.J. Simpson Trial: Beyond Black & White" (1996, TV), YO SOY BORICUA, PA'QUE TU LO SEPAS! / I'M BORICUA, JUST SO YOU KNOW! and THE RHYTHM OF MY SOUL: KENTUCKY ROOTS MUSIC (also director) (both 2006), and "The American Brew" (2007, TV - also director).
