Born in Buffalo, NY; educated at Yale. A versatile, prolific musician, he composed over 120 scores and songs for the stage and TV as well as for films. Along with lyricist Richard Maltby Jr., he composed several Broadway and off-Broadway musicals including Baby (1983), Starting Here, Starting Now (1977), Close Than Ever (1989) and Big (1996). Shire won an Academy Award® for the song "It Goes Like It Goes" from his score for NORMA RAE (1979).
Notable film scores include SUMMERTREE, DRIVE, HE SAID and SKIN GAME (all 1971), TO FIND A MAN and STEELYARD BLUES (both 1972), TWO PEOPLE and CLASS OF '44 (both 1973), THE CONVERSATION and THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (both 1974), THE FORTUNE, FAREWELL, MY LOVELY and THE HINDENBURG (all 1975), ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, HARRY AND WALTER GO TO NEW YORK and THE BIG BUS (all 1976), STRAIGHT TIME (1978), NORMA RAE, FAST BREAK, THE PROMISE and OLD BOYFRIENDS (all 1979), THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA, ONLY WHEN I LAUGH and PATERNITY (all 1981), MAX DUGAN RETURNS (1983), OH, GOD! YOU DEVIL and 2010 (both 1984), and RETURN TO OZ (1985). Since 1985, most of Shire's work has been for television movies, but his subsequent film scores include SHORT CIRCUIT and 'NIGHT, MOTHER (both 1986), BACKFIRE (1987), VICE VERSA and MONKEY SHINES (both 1988), PARIS TROUT and BED & BREAKFAST (both 1991), THE JOURNEY INSIDE (1994), ONE NIGHT STAND (1995), ASH WEDNESDAY (2002), THE TOLLBOOTH (2004) and ZODIAC (2007). Divorced from actress Talia Shire in 1978, he married actress Didi Conn in 1984.
