Born in Old Westbury, NY. Classically stage-trained character player, best known in films for her Academy Award®-winning peformance as the spurned spouse in NETWORK. Made her Broadway debut in 1935 with Bitter Oleander; won a Tony® for her performance in The Crucible (1953). Other notable screen credits include THE NUN'S STORY (1959), THE YOUNG LOVERS (1964), BLOODLINE and THE PROMISE (both 1979), THE FORMULA (1980), ENDLESS LOVE (1981), POLTERGEIST (1982), TWO OF A KIND (1983), POWER (1986) and DECEIVED (1991). She appeared frequently in TV series and made-for-TV movies.
