Don Trumbull

Father of special effects wizard Douglas Trumbull (b. 1942). The elder Trumbull began his career in the film industry working as an uncredited special effects rigger on THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939). He would go on to innovate new techniques in visual effects motion control in such films as STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (both 1977), twice winning Academy scientific and technical achievement awards for his efforts.

Other notable effects credits include SILENT RUNNING (1972, creator: drone units), "Battlestar Galactica" (1978, TV: special mechanical equipment), STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979, mechanical engineer), FIREFOX (1982, mechanical special effects), LIFEFORCE (1985, special visual effects crew) and SPACEBALLS (1987, visual effects engineer: Apogee, Inc.).

 Technical Achievement Awards (Certificate) 1984: For the design and development of the "Blue Max" high-power, blue-flux projector for traveling matte composite photography. (w. Jonathan Erland, Stephen Fog & Paul Burk - all of Apogee Incorporated)
 Medal of Commendation 1990: In appreciation for outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. (w. Dr. Roderick T. Ryan and Geoffrey H. Williamson)
 Scientific and Engineering Awards (Plaque) 1998: For advancing the state-of-the-art of real-time motion-control, as exemplified in the Gazelle and Zebra camera dolly systems. [w. Michael Sorensen & Richard Alexander (both of Sorensen Designs International)
