Born in New York City. Belongs to an elite group of artists who have received all four of the US performing industry's major awards: the Oscar® (A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, 1977), the Emmy® ("Night of a Hundred Stars", 1982), the Grammy® (1988) and the Tony® (Titanic, 1997). (Others in the group include Mel Brooks, Sir John Gielgud, Marvin Hamlisch, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, Barbra Streisand, Audrey Hepburn and Mike Nichols.)
Entered American film in the early 1970s as orchestrator of three Mel Brooks films: THE TWELVE CHAIRS (1970), BLAZING SADDLES and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (both 1974). Other notable orchestrating credits include THE ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES' SMARTER BROTHER (1975), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1978), REDS (1981), THE FANTASTICKS (1995), THE BIRDCAGE (1996) and SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007). Tunick's notable film score composing credits include FORT APACHE THE BRONX and ENDLESS LOVE (both 1981), I AM THE CHEESE (1983), THE LAST GOOD TIME (1994) and FIND ME GUILTY (2006). He has also composed extensively for television.
