Jost Vacano
(1934 -     )
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Osnabrück, Germany. Entered West German film in 1962 with Peter Schamoni's short BODEGA BOHEMIA. Beginning in 1964, he worked extensively in German television. Chiefly associated with Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, for whom he has created several exquisite canvases, from the melancholic hues of SOLDAAT VAN ORANJE / SOLDIER OF ORANGE (1977) and SPETTERS (1980) to the hard-edged, high-tech worlds of ROBOCOP (1987) and TOTAL RECALL (1990). Vacano is noted for his crisp color and fluid, mobile camera work. He was also d.p. for Volker Schlöndorff's THE LOST HONOR OF KATHARINA BLUM (1975) and Wolfgang Petersen's DAS BOOT (1981).

Other notable credits include THE NEVERENDING STORY (1984), 52 PICK-UP (1986), ROCKET GIBRALTAR (1988), TOTAL RECALL (1990, UNTAMED HEART (1993), SHOWGIRLS (1995), STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997) and HOLLOW MAN (2000).
