Part of the Westmore family of Hollywood makeup artists who dominated the profession for more than half a century and whose descendants continue to work in films. Grandson of wigmaker and "tonsorial saloon" operator George Westmore who, after emigrating to the US from Britain, began his career as a movie makeup artist at the Metro studios in Hollywood in 1917. Michael's father, George's eldest son Monte (or Mont), signed with Selznick International and supervised the makeup for GONE WITH THE WIND (1939). Michael continued to pursue the family business, entering American television as makeup artist on "The Munsters" TV series for 70 episodes from 1964-1966. His first feature film makeup credit is for SHADOW OF FEAR (1973). He is skilled in special makeup effects and his credits include ROCKY (1976), NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), CAPRICORN ONE, PARADISE ALLEY and CIRCLE OF IRON (all 1978), ROCKY II (1979), RAGING BULL (1980), VICTORY and TRUE CONFESSIONS (both 1981), ROCKY III, BLADE RUNNER and FIRST BLOOD (all 1982), THE STAR CHAMBER and UNCOMMON VALOR (both 1983), , WHY ME?, ICEMAN and 2010 (all 1984), MASK (1985), THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR (1986), ROXANNE and MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (both 1987), JOHNNY HANDSOME and THE BLOOD OF HEROES (both 1989), ROCKY V (1990), "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (makeup supervisor, 1987-1994), STAR TREK: GENERATIONS (1994), STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), CHACHI 420 and STAR TREK: INSURRECTION (both 1998), ALONG CAME A SPIDER (2001) and STAR TREK: NEMESIS (2002).
