Born in Queens, NY. First came to prominence for his contribution to Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER (1972) and THE GODFATHER, PART II (1974), casting both the Sicilian countryside and the streets of Little Italy in a rich, nostalgic glow.
Willis has subsequently become best known for his collaborations with Woody Allen, beginning with ANNIE HALL (1977). Highlights of the teaming include bleak, understated hues of INTERIORS (1978), the sumptuous, impressionistic colors of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY (1982), the melancholic grays of MANHATTAN (1979) and the striking black-and-white of STARDUST MEMORIES (1980). Since ending his creative partnership with Allen, Willis has continued to produce exceptional work, as with Alan Pakula's PRESUMED INNOCENT (1990) and Coppola's THE GODFATHER, PART III (also 1990). Other notable (non-nominated) credits include THE LANDLORD (1970), KLUTE (1971), THE PAPER CHASE (1973), THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974), THE DROWNING POOL (1975), ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976), 9/30/55 (1977), WINDOWS (1980, also director), PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (1981), BROADWAY DANNY ROSE (1984), THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and PERFECT (both 1985), THE MONEY PIT (1986), THE PICK-UP ARTIST (1987), BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY (1988), MALICE (1993) and THE DEVIL'S OWN (1997).
