Born in New York City; educated at NYU. In partnership with Robert Chartoff from the late 1960s, Winkler produced an impressive array of modern American gems, such as THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? (1969), ROCKY (1976) and RAGING BULL (1980). Since REVOLUTION (1985) he has worked mostly on his own, continuing to shepherd such noteworthy features as Bertrand Tavernier's ROUND MIDNIGHT (1986) and Costa-Gavras's MUSIC BOX (1989). Winkler made his directorial debut in 1991 with the McCarthy-era drama GUILTY BY SUSPICION, starring Robert De Niro, and followed it with NIGHT AND THE CITY (1992).

(both 2006), and THE MECHANIC (announced for 2008). Married to actress Margo Melson Winkler; his son is director Charles Winkler.
