Born in Paris, France; educated at City College of New York. After college, he began to work in the travel industry. After several years of doing this, he decided at age 30, he wanted to pursue a career as a costume designer. His first entree was working as a "gofor" to legendary costume maker Helene Pons during her execution of the Adrian/Tony Duquette designs for the original Broadway production of Camelot (1960). His abilities were noticed by many of the designers working with Miss Pons, and he began to work his way up to assisting some of the most highly regarded designers in New York, including Theoni Aldridge. Within six years, he was designing Broadway productions under his own name and in 1968, he would have his first film credit, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER.
Bringing the knowlege he learned while working on Broadway, Wolsky would concentrate his career on the designing of feature films. Over the next three decades he would build a body of work impressive not only by its size but by its addressing every possible film genre with a consistant level of design quality. Wolsky has distinguished his work by the use of highly controlled color palettes inspite of being practically color blind. His easy manner and eye for detail would not only bring him repeat assignments from his colleaugues, but earn him the reputation as both Paul Muzarsky's and the late Bob Fosse's costume designer. To date, he has been nominated for the Academy Award® five times, winning it twice. He was also honored by The Costume Designer's Guild with their Lifetime Achievement Award. Other notable (non-nominated) design credits in almost 70 films and made-for-television movies include WHERE'S POPPA? (1970), LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS (1972), HARRY AND TONTO, LENNY and THE GAMBLER (all 1974), NEXT STOP, GREENWICH VILLAGE (1976), THE TURNING POINT and THIEVES (both 1977), AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, GREASE and FINGERS (all 1978), MANHATTAN and METEOR (both 1979), THE JAZZ SINGER (1980), PATERNITY (1981), TEMPEST (1982), STAR 80 and TO BE OR NOT TO BE (both 1983), MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON (1984), THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN (1985), CRIMES OF THE HEART (1986), NADINE (1987), MOON OVER PARADOR (1988), SHE-DEVIL and ENEMIES: A LOVE STORY (both 1989), FUNNY ABOUT LOVE (1990), SCENES FROM A MALL (1991), FATAL INSTINCT and THE PELICAN BRIEF (both 1993), JUNIOR (1994), THE GRASS HARP (1995), UP CLOSE & PERSONAL and STRIPTEASE (both 1996), THE JACKAL (1997), YOU'VE GOT MAIL (1998), GALAXY QUEST (1999), LUCKY NUMBERS (2000), ROAD TO PERDITION and MAID IN MANHATTAN (both 2002), THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (2004), JARHEAD and ASK THE DUST (both 2006), and ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR (both 2007).
