Aleandro was quite up-front about her liberal political views and, during the late 1970s, was exiled to Uruguay. Later she moved to Spain and did not return to Argentina until after the fall of the military junta in 1982. In 1996, she starred on stage as Maria Callas in Master Class and won the Maria Guerrero Award. That same year, she was honored as Ciudadano Ilustre de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires ("Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires").

Aleandro was married to actor Oscar Ferrigno (d. 1986); their son, Oscar Ferrigno Jr., is also an actor.
