Born in London, England. British playwright (The Ruling Class, Red Noses, The Bewitched, Laughter, Auschwitz, Dreaming), television writer and director who started out in British film as a screenwriter in 1958 (VIOLENT MOMENT). Other notable screen credits, alone or in collaboration, include THE PROFESSIONALS and THE WHITE TRAP (both 1959), OFFBEAT (1961), RING OF SPIES (1964), NOT WITH MY WIFE, YOU DON'T (1966), THE RULING CLASS (1972, from his play), ENCHANTED APRIL (1992), VOICES (1995), MIGHT AS WELL LIVE (2000), and THE MOON AND THE STARS (2007). Barnes' television writing credits include episodes of the series "No Hiding Place" (1959) and the made-for-TV "Merlin" (1998), "Alice in Wonderland" and "A Christmas Carol" (both 1999), and "Arabian Nights" (2000). Barnes was married to his first wife, Charlotte Beck, from 1958 until her death in 1995. He then married Christine Horn, who gave birth to their first child, Leela, when Barnes was aged 69. Triplets Nathaniel, Zachary and Abigail soon followed.
