Born in Lowell, MA; educated at Boston University (theater arts). Prolific stage performer whose screen career was boosted by a best supporting actress Oscar® for MOONSTRUCK (1987). (Her Oscar statuette was stolen from her home kitchen in 1989. The burglar left only her nameplate.)
