Dorothy Fadiman
Biography from Concentric Media

American documentary filmmaker who founded the non-profit video and digital production company Concentric Media in 1978. Concentric Media has produced documentaries on various human rights issues, including the historic struggle for reproductive freedom in the United States, the ongoing efforts in Ethiopia to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and the need to add progressive values and courses to our schools and efforts to strengthen women's rights in India. Most recently films have focused on election integrity.

Fadiman has been producing award-winning media with a focus on social justice and human rights since 1976. She lives in Menlo Park, CA, where she moved to pursue graduate work in communication studies at Stanford University. Subjects range from the light of Spirit in every faith (RADIANCE: The Experience of Light, 1977) to progressive education that honors children's natural knowing (WHY DO THESE KIDS LOVE SCHOOL?, 1990) to the extraordinary healing journey of a woman with a spinal cord injury (MOMENT by MOMENT: The Healing Journey of Molly Hale). Her interest in women's issues includes these films: WOMAN by WOMAN: New Hope for the Villages of India, a three film series FROM the BACK ALLEYS to the SUPREME COURT & BEYOND and FROM RISK to ACTION: Women and HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, one of a five film series, SEEDS of HOPE: Meeting the Challenges of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.

Her films have been shown on PBS stations nationwide, plus a number of international venues. Her current projects include a documentary exploring a spectrum of "irregularities" in the 2004 Presidential election and another on the disenfranchisement of Native American voters.

Her producing/directing credits also include the Oscar®-nominated short film WHEN ABORTION WAS ILLEGAL: UNTOLD STORIES (1992), FROM DANGER TO DIGNITY (1995), and THE FRAGILE PROMISE OF CHOICE: ABORTION IN THE UNITED STATES TODAY (1996). She was also an associate producer for GROOVE (2000).

In addition to its Oscar nomination, WHEN ABORTION WAS ILLEGAL: UNTOLD STORIES received numerous awards: the Gold Medal from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Gold Apple from the National Educational Film/Video Festival, Best Documentary at the Atlanta International Film/Video Festival, the EMMA (Exceptional Merit Media Award) from the National Women's Political Caucus, the Maggie from Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the Joey Award, the Humanitarian Award of Excellence from the Sinking Creek Film Festival, and the Exemplary Leadership Award from the Religion Coalition for Reproductive Choice.
