Born Larry Fishburne III in Augusta, GA. Began his acting career on the New York stage at age ten and made his film debut two years later as the "Me" in CORNBREAD, EARL AND ME (1975). Since spending 18 months in the Phillippines filming APOCALYPSE NOW (1979), Fishburne has appeared in several other Coppola films, as well as playing Swain in THE COLOR PURPLE (1985) and Afrocentrist Dap Dunlap in Spike Lee's SCHOOL DAZE (1988). He was featured in the recurring role of Cowboy Curtis in TV's "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" and continues to alternate between stage and film.
Fishburne starred as a loose cannon former convict in the 1990 world premiere of August Wilson's Two Trains Running at Yale Repertory Theater and recreated the role on Broadway, winning a Tony® for it in 1992. He brought tremendous moral authority to his portrayal of Furious Styles, a model father who steers his son away from LA gang life in BOYZ N THE HOOD (1991), and radiated sullen intensity as an undercover cop in Bill Duke's edgy thriller, DEEP COVER (1992). Fishburne's riveting, unflattering portrait of 60s pop star Ike Turner was central to the success of the Tina Turner biopic WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT (1993), which reunited the actor with Angela Bassett, who had played his estranged wife in BOYZ. He received Emmy® Awards for executive producing and acting in 1997's TV movie "Miss Evers' Boys." Other notable credits include RUMBLE FISH (1983), THE COTTON CLUB (1984), GARDENS OF STONE (1987), RED HEAT (1988), KING OF NEW YORK (1990), CLASS ACTION (1991), SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER (1993), HIGHER LEARNING, JUST CAUSE and OTHELLO (all 1995), FLED (1996), HOODLUM (1997), ONCE IN THE LIFE (2000), BIKER BOYS and MYSTIC RIVER (both 2003), ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (2005), AKEELAH AND THE BEE, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, FIVE FINGERS and BOBBY (all 2006), THE DEATH AND LIFE OF BOBBY Z and BLACK WATER TRANSIT (both 2007), 21, TORTURED, DAYS OF WRATH and 4CHOSEN (all scheduled for 2008), and THE LAST FULL MEASURE (planned for 2009). Perhaps his most popular recent roles have been as Morpheus in THE MATRIX (1999), THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTION (both 2003).
