Born in Knoxville TN; educated at the University of Tennessee (philosophy) and Washington University (architecture). Began his career directing short films, moving into features as set designer on Alan Parker's SHOOT THE MOON (1982). Ganz re-teamed with Parker as art director of BIRDY (1984) and ANGEL HEART (1987) and worked on independent films (TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE, 1987, LOVE CRIMES, 1992) as well as big-budget mainstream fare (A VIEW TO A KILL, 1985). He earned an Oscar® nomination as set decorator on Francis Ford Coppola's slick homage to the 40s, TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM (1988).
Other notable production design credits include BULL DURHAM and THE APPOINTMENTS OF DENNIS JENNINGS (both 1988), BLAZE (1989), LOVE HURTS (1991), KUFFS (1992), COBB (1994) and THE CURE and THE LITTLE DEATH (both 1995). Ganz died of a heart attack at the age of 47.
