Born in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. Cinematographer who entered Chinese film in 1987 with RED SORGHUM / HONG GAO LIANG. Other notable credits include HAI ZI WANG / KING OF THE CHILDREN (also 1987), DAIHAO MEIZHOUBAO / CODENAME COUGAR (1989), JU DOU (1990), BIAN ZOU BIAN CHANG / LIFE ON A STRING (1991), BA WANG BEI JI / FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE and DA LU / THE TRAIL (both 1993), IN THE HEAT OF THE SUN / YANGGUANG CANLAN DE RIZI (1994), LANLING WANT / WARRIOR LANLING (1995), LAST CHANCE LOVE (1997), THE GINGERBREAD MAN and HURLYBURLY (both 1998), DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP / GUIZI LAI LE and AUTUMN IN NEW YORK (both 2000), and ALL THE INVISIBLE CHILDREN / ENFANTS INVSIBLES (2005, segment: "Song Song and Little Cat"). He directed the 2005 feature KONG QUE / PEACOCK.
Gu is married to actress Jiang Winli. He was the first director of photography from China to join the American Society of Cinematographers.
