Born in Fayal, Azores, Portugal; educated at Lancing College; New College, Oxford (French, German). Leading figure of the English theater world, best known for his award-winning stage and screen adaptations of Choderlos de Laclos's DANGEROUS LIAISONS (1988, also co-producer). Stage works include When Did You Last See My Mother?, Total Eclipse, The Philanthropist, Savages, Sunset Boulevard (libretto), and translations of three plays by Yazmina Reza: Art, The Unexpected Man and Life X 3.
Other notable screen credits include A DOLL'S HOUSE (1973), THE HONORARY CONSUL (1983, screenplay), THE GOOD FATHER (1985), OVIRI (1986, screenplay), TOTAL ECLIPSE and CARRINGTON (also director) (both 1995), MARY REILLY (1996, screenplay), THE SECRET AGENT (also 1996, also director), THE QUIET AMERICAN (2002, screenplay), IMAGINING ARGENTINA (2003, also director), ATONEMENT (2007, screenplay), and JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL and COCO AVANT CHANEL (both 2008). Hampton was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.
