Born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England; trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama (London). Stocky British actor who first won critical attention in TV's "Pennies From Heaven" (1978) and gave an outstanding performance as a doomed London mobster in THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY (1981). Hoskins has gone on to establish himself as a leading international star, earning British Academy and Cannes Festival best actor awards for MONA LISA (1986) and making his directorial debut in 1988 with THE RAGGEDY RAWNEY.
