Born Patricia Colleen Nelligan in London, Ontario, Canada; educated at York University (Canada) and the Central School of Speech and Drama (London). Four-time Tony® nominee (Plenty, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Serious Money and Spoils of War) who has appeared intermittently in films since the mid-1970s. Memorable in the title role of ELENI (1985), based on the life of American writer Nicholas Gage and his attempts to unravel the truth about his mother's execution by Greek communists after WW II.

Other notable screen credits include THE ROMANTIC ENGLISHWOMAN (1975), DRACULA (1979), MR. PATMAN (1980), EYE OF THE NEEDLE (1981), WITHOUT A TRACE (1983), IL GIORNO PRIMA / CONTROL (1987), WHITE ROOM (1990), FRANKIE AND JOHNNY, CAPE FEAR and THE PRINCE OF TIDES (all 1991), SHADOWS AND FOG (1992), FATAL INSTINCT (1993), BY WOMAN'S HAND and WOLF (both 1994), MARGARET'S MUSEUM and HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT (both 1995), UP CLOSE & PERSONAL (1996), U.S. MARSHALS and BOY MEETS GIRL (both 1998), THE CIDER HOUSE RULES (1999), and PREMONITION (2007). Nelligan has appeared in episodes of several TV series and made-for-television movies.

Nelligan married composer Robert Reale in 1989.
