Born in The Bronx, NY. Reiner began his career as an actor and appeared in two films directed by his father, Carl [ENTER LAUGHING (1967) and WHERE'S POPPA? (1970)] before gaining national prominence for his role as Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law, Mike Stivic, on TV's "All in the Family." He made a hilarious directorial debut with the "rockumentary" parody, THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984), and has since established himself as one of Hollywood's most reliable, and consistently commercial, directors.
Reiner enjoyed critical and financial success with the comedies THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) and WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... (1989), but he also demonstrated a sure feel for dramatic material with his poignant adaptation of Stephen King's adolescent thriller, STAND BY ME (1986), and has since proven equal facility in a variety of genres. He is one of the co-founders of Castle Rock Entertainment, whose productions have included MISERY (1990, another King adaptation); CITY SLICKERS (1991) (directed by Ron Underwood); and the courtroom drama A FEW GOOD MEN (1992). Other notable producing/directing credits include NORTH (1994), THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT (1995), GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI (1996), THE STORY OF US (1999), ALEX & EMMA (2003), and THE BUCKET LIST (2007). Notable recent acting credits include BULLETS OVER BROADWAY and MIXED NUTS (both 1994), THE FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996), PRIMARY COLORS (1998), EDTV and THE STORY OF US (both 1999), ALEX & EMMA (2003). Stepdaughter Tracy Reiner (whom he helped raise during his 1971-1979 marriage to her mother, actress-director Penny Marshall) has appeared in films directed by both; brother Lucas directed his first feature, THE SPIRIT OF '76, in 1991.
