Born in Long Beach, Long Island, NY; educated at Union College, Schenectady, NY. Screenwriter who made his directorial mark with FIELD OF DREAMS (1989), which he adapted from the novel by W.P. Kinsella. The film's combination of baseball, fantasy and nostalgia proved irresistible to American audiences and generated over $60 million at the box office.

Other notable writing credits include RHINESTONE and ALL OF ME (both 1984), IN THE MOOD (1987, also director), RELENTLESS (1989), SNEAKERS (1992, also director) and "Freedom Song" (2000, TV - also director). He directed part 1 of the 2001 TV mini-series "Band of Brothers", the 2002 feature SUM OF ALL FEARS, and THE ICE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD (scheduled for 2008).
