Pete Romano

As a former U.S. Navy underwater cameraman, Romano has been shooting film underwater since 1973 and has been an underwater Director of Photography since 1986. In 1983 he founded HydroFlex Inc., a research and development facility specializing in renting professional underwater and wet set motion picture and lighting equipment for the feature film and commercial rental markets worldwide.

In 1990 Romano shared an Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.) Scientific and Engineering Award for the development of the Seapar® 1200w underwater HMI lamp developed for Jim Cameron's underwater epic, THE ABYSS, and in 1996 he received a Technical Achievement Award from the Society of Operating Cameramen (SOC) for the development of the HydroFlex 35-3 system. He received a 2001 Technical Achievement Award from A.M.P.A.S. for the design and devlopment of the Remote AquaCam. He is a member of International 600 and a DGA 2nd Unit Director.

In addition, Romano has designed and built custom underwater housings and camera accessories for the Cousteau Society, IMAX Corp., Iwerks Entertainment and Jean-Michelle Cousteau Productions.

 Scientific and Engineering Award (Plaque) 1990: For the development of the SeaPar 1200 watt HMI Underwater Lamp. (w. Richard Mula (also of HydroFlex, Inc.)
 Technical Achievement Award (Certificate) 2001: For the design and development of the Remote AquaCam, an underwater camera housing system for use in motion pictures.
