Born in Teheran, Iran; educated at the Sorbonne, Paris (philosophy). Former film critic (for Cahiers du Cinéma), photojournalist (in India) and jazz impresario who formed the Les Films du Losange production company with director Eric Rohmer in 1962. Schroeder produced all of Rohmer's early films, beginning with the as-yet-unreleased short, LA BOULANGERE DE MONCEAU (1962), which he also narrated. After producing, appearing in and assisting with several other New Wave films, Schroeder directed his first feature, MORE (1969). He has been acclaimed for his feature-length documentaries, notably GENERAL IDI AMIN DADA (1974), a portrait of the former Ugandan despot. Schroeder first attracted attention in the US for BARFLY (1987), an engaging account of a low-life, alcohol-sodden writer (Mickey Rourke) modelled not-too-loosely on Charles Bukowski. His The Charles Bukowski Tapes, a series of fascinating and highly entertaining "interviews" with the author made during early work on BARFLY, was shown on French TV and at New York's Public Theater in 1989. Schroeder's most notable project was REVERSAL OF FORTUNE (1990), a darkly humorous, multi-layered account of the Claus and Sunny von Bulow scandal based on the book by Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz. The film featured finely turned performances from Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close and Ron Silver. He produced LA COLLECTIONNEUSE / THE COLLECTOR (1967), MA NUIT CHEZ MAUD / MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S (1969) and L'AMOUR L'APRÈS-MIDI / CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON (1972).
