Barnaby Thompson

Thompson is a co-founder of Fragile Films, one of the UK's most successful independent production companies. They produced SPICEWORLD in 1998 starring the Spice Girls and AN IDEAL HUSBAND in 1999 starring Rupert Everett and Cate Blanchett which was nominated for two Golden Globes and three BAFTAs. In 2001 they produced both LUCKY BREAK (directed by Peter Catanneo of THE FULL MONTY) and HIGH HEELS AND LOW LIFES (directed by Mel Smith of BEAN and starring Minnie Driver). THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (starring Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench) was released in 2002. HOPE SPRINGS, a romantic comedy (starring Colin Firth, Heather Graham and Minnie Driver) is currently in post-production (2003).

Barnaby Thompson set up Fragile Films in 1996 having returned to the UK after working for seven years in the U.S.A. There, he was Vice President, Creative Affairs at Broadway Pictures. During his tenure, he co-produced THE KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY (1996), which was nominated for four Canadian Genies; TOMMY BOY (1995) starring Chris Farley and David Spade; LASSIE (1994) directed by Dan Petrie; CONEHEADS (1993), starring Dan Ackroyd and WAYNE'S WORLD 1 & 2 (1992 & 1993), with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. All these films were made for Paramount Pictures. Subsequent producing credits include SPICE WORLD (1997), AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1999), KEVIN & PERRY GO LARGE (2000), HIGH HEELS AND LOW LIFES and LUCKY BREAK (both 2001), THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (2002), HOPE SPRINGS (2003), VALIANT and IMAGINE ME & YOU (both 2005), ALIEN AUTOPSY and FADE TO BLACK (both 2006), I WANT CANDY and ST. TRINIAN'S (both 2007), and EASY VIRTUE (scheduled for release in 2009).

Before moving to America in 1990, Barnaby ran the UK-based independent production company World's End Productions. There he produced and directed many award-winning documentary films, including JIMI HENDRIX, which won the Silver Plaque at the Chicago Film Festival and THE FORGOTTEN HOLOCAUST, which received the Silver Medal at the New York Film Festival. He also produced DEAR ROSIE (1990), a short film nominated for both British and American Academy Awards®.

Thompson and partners Uri Fruchtmann, Harry Handelsman and John Kao are the directors of Ealing Film Studios, of which he is the head.
