Stuntperson doing a "fire burn" |
Here's the process involved in a fire burn by a stuntperson: You put talcum powder on your skin so that no steam will escape and burn. Stunt-Gel that was previously cooled (packed in ice) is applied to your naked body. Following the gel you get dressed in Lomax underwear and a Lomax undershirt or a full fire suit, which were previously coated in the cold gel. You also put on any fire hoods or gloves you might need. Also, if you need a respirator or other breathing apparatus, this is where it's fitted. Once dressed in your under- and outer garments, you get dressed into your wardrobe. This clothing is composed of natural fibers only (i.e. cotton, wool, denim, etc.). Now dressed you leave the trailer and approach the burn site. At the burn site your head is now coated with the stunt gel - over your eyes, in your ears, in your hair. The F/X specialist then applies the accelerant to your burn area -- back, legs, whatever. The director rolls the camera. When you're ready you give two thumbs up and hold your breath. The accellerant is lighted. Then you begin to wave your arms around and try to sell it. When you begin to feel the heat this will indicate that it is time to fall to the ground, and the safeties will extinguish you. This burning process lasts from 10-30 seconds. Following this you also got the added bonus of taking a cold shower.
