Born Franklin Brauner in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. Met Quentin Tarantino at a video store they both worked at in the 1980's. He wrote the background radio dialogue for Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS (1992). Avary wrote and directed KILLING ZOE (1994), THE RULES OF ATTRACTION (2002) and GLAMORAMA (2004). Other screen writing credits include CRYING FREEMAN (1995, uncredited), RPM (1998), THE RULES OF ATTRACTION (2002, also producer & director), GLITTERATI (2004, also producer & director), SILEND HILL (2006), BEOWULF (2007, also exec. prod.), and RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN (announced for 2010, also director).

Regarding PULP FICTION (1994): Avary's writing contributions reportedly include: 1) A boxer who refuses to throw a fight. 2) A pair of hitmen who accidentally shoot a hostage in the head in the back of a car. [Actually a deleted script idea from TRUE ROMANCE (1993, uncredited)]. 3) A boxer who tells his wife they are in danger, and must leave the country. Though Quentin Tarantino recieved credit, it was actually Avary who concieved the TOP GUN gay reference speech that Tarantino used in SLEEP WITH ME (1994).

(on Quentin Tarantino): "I've realised that I can't hang out with him. I talk with him, and he just sucks stuff from me."
