A Great Day in Harlem (1994) |
The 60-minute film A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM (1994) is based on an amazing day in 1958 when 58 musicians, including Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rawlins, and Count Basie turned out at the corner of Lennox Avenue and 125th St. in the heart of Harlem at 10 a.m. -- an unreasonably early hour for performers who often play until dawn -- in answer to the request of a photographer for Esquire magazine. The film incorporates home movies, interviews, and performance segments by many of the musicians. This was the last on-camera appearance for many of the musicians.
Bach also wrote, produced and directed THE SPITBALL STORY (1998), a 21-minute documentary featuring trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and musicians Milt Hinton and Jonah Jones discussing an incident that happened when they were performing with the Cab Calloway band.
