In many of his screenplays, a character is technologically dependant but is cast into a situation where he must rely on his instincts and intuition rather than his technical know-how. This is based on his experience as a downed Vietnam fighter pilot. He wrote the book Brother in Arms, an account of his return to Vietnam as a journalist/civilian 15 years after serving there as a young lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Broyles co-wrote the award-winning screenplay for APOLLO 13 (1995) with long-time friend Al Reinert. Other notable screen credits (alone or in collaboration) include ENTRAPMENT (1999), CAST AWAY (2000), PLANET OF THE APES (2001), UNFAITHFUL (2002), THE POLAR EXPRESS (2004), JARHEAD (2005), and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006).
