British-born, raised in Scotland, Capaldi made his impact as an actor in 1983, when he played Danny Oldsen in Bill Forsyth's celebrated film LOCAL HERO. Ten years later he would receive a Best Short Film Oscar® and a BAFTA award for Best Short Film for FRANZ KAFKA'S IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, which he wrote, directed and produced. Other film directing credits include STRICTLY SINATRA (2001) and THE GREAT PRETENDER (scheduled for release in 2008).

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was not his debut as a writer. In 1992, he wrote and starred in SOFT TOP HARD SHOULDER, a Stefan Schwartz film that the audience voted Best Film at the London Film Festival. Again, as writer and director, he has just completed a romantic thriller, STRICTLY SINATRA, starring Ian Hart and Kelly MacDonald.

Other films that he has starred in include DANGEROUS LIAISONS, SHOOTING FISH, SMILA'S SENSE OF SNOW, and BEAN, directed by Mel Smith. His most recent film was WHAT RATS WON'T DO, a romantic comedy co-starring James Frain and Kate Beckenham.

Roles on television include roles in "The Cloning of Joanna May," "The Vicar of Dibley" and "The Crow Road." He recently starred in "Tom Jones" as Lord Fellamar, the series "Psychos" and "The Greatest Store in The World" opposite Dervla Kirwan, Sean Hughes and Ricky Tomlinson.

Capaldi is also a highly regarded stage actor, having starred in the long-running West End musical Blood Brothers and spent a season at The Young Vic. He also appeared in Treats and Valued Friends at The Hampstead Theatre and most recently in David Hare's The Judas Kiss, both at the Playhouse, London and on Broadway as Robbie Ross, opposite Liam Neeson.
