Cromwell is the scion of a notable show business family. His father, director John Cromwell (1887-1979; Bette Davis' OF HUMAN BONDAGE) had dual careers in theatre and film, and was an early president of the Directors Guild; his mother, Kay Johnson (1904-1975), was a stage and film actress, and his stepmother, Ruth Nelson (1905-1992), also an actress, was an original member of the legendary Group Theatre. He followed family tradition by marrying actress/director Julie Cobb (b. 1947), daughter of the late Lee J. Cobb (1911-1976). The actor's early career bespeaks the character of the man himself. After studying at Carnegie-Mellon (then Carnegie Tech), he worked at the Cleveland Playhouse before heading for England for a summer-long celebration of Shakespeare's birth. Upon his return, he toured black communities in the rural South at the height of the civil rights struggle, and directed as well as acted for the Free Southern Theatre. Cromwell made his film debut in MURDER BY DEATH (1976) opposite such movie greats as Alex Guinness and Maggie Smith. Other credits include THE CHEAP DETECTIVE (1978), NOBODY'S PERFEKT (1981), THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS (1983), TANK, REVENGE OF THE NERDS, OH, GOD! YOU DEVIL and THE HOUSE OF GOD (all 1984), EXPLORERS (1985), A FINE MESS (1986), REVENGE OF THE NERDS II: NERDS IN PARADISE (1987), THE RESCUE (1988), PINK CADILLAC and THE RUNNIN' KIND (both 1989), ROMEO IS BLEEDING (1993), ERASER (1996), THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE TREE and OWD BOB (both 1997), SPECIES II and DEEP IMPACT (both 1998) and THE BABE (1992), a film biography of baseball legend Babe Ruth. Cromwell is the founder of Hecel Oyakapi, a foundation committed to preserving the language and culture of the Oglala Lakota through the arts. He and his family live in Los Angeles.
