Born in Bloomington, MN. His parents were both doctors. His interest in animation began when he made his first flip-book at the age of eight. He attended college at the California Institute of the Arts, where he produced his own short animated films; WINTER (1988), PALM SPRINGS and the Student Academy award-winning NEXT DOOR. Docter began his association with Pixar Animation Studios in 1990, when he became the third animator on the staff. Prior to joining Pixar, he was involved in creating hand-drawn animation for Disney Feature Animation, Bob Rogers and Company, Bajus-Jones Film Corp., and Reelworks in Minneapolis.
Upon arrival at Pixar in May 1990, Pete created animated and directed commercials. He was named supervising animator on the Academy award-winning TOY STORY (1995), a 4½-year effort. He wrote the initial story treatment for TOY STORY 2 (1999) and helped storyboard A BUG'S LIFE (1998) before beginning work on MONSTERS, INC. (2001) in 1996. It marked his debut as an animated feature film director. Docter is the executive producer for the 2008 Pixar release, WALL-E. Docter currently lives in northern California with his wife, daughter Elizabeth, and son Nicholas who contributed a few screams used in MONSTERS, INC.
