Born in Uddingston, Scotland, UK; studied acting and music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (majored in voice). Doyle taught music for a year after leaving the Academy and began composing music for successful plays, including Slab Boys, which went from the Edinburgh Festival to the West End and Broadway. After doing British television, Doyle joined Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theatre Company in 1987. He admits that he didn't know whether he wanted to be an actor or a composer, and credits Branagh with giving him his first opportunity, HENRY V (1989).
