Born in New York City; grew up mainly in Los Angeles; attended school in Colorado; trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse, New York. Amiable, unassuming leading man who also runs the New York-based production company Double Play with partner Amy Robinson. Dunne produced the Martin Scorsese-directed AFTER HOURS (1985), in which he also starred.

Other notable film credits include (as producer) HEAD OVER HEELS (1979), BABY, IT'S YOU (1983), RUNNING ON EMPTY (1988), WHITE PALACE (1990), ONCE AROUND (1991), JOE'S APARTMENT (1996, exec. producer), GAME 6 (exec. prod.) and FIERCE PEOPLE (both 2005, both also director); (as director) ADDICTED TO LOVE (1997), PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998), FAMOUS (2000), NAILED RIGHT IN (2003), YOUR PRODUCT HERE (2006), and THE ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND (2008). Dunne co-wrote, co-produced and directed the 1996 Oscar®-winning Live Action Short Film "Duke of Groove".

He is the son of writer Dominick Dunne (b. 1925) and brother of the late actress Dominique Dunne (1959-1982), who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, chef John Thomas Sweeney. Married to model-turned-actress Carey Lowell from 1989 until 1995.
