Gerchman is a native New Englander. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Trinity College in Connecticut and a master's degree from the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester. After holding positions with the Zygo Corporation and the American Optical Corporation, he joined the Rank Organisation. In 1994 he was promoted to the position of chief optical engineer with the Cooke division of Rank Taylor Hobson Ltd. He temporarily relocated to the United Kingdom where he headed the development of the Series Four (S4) Cooke Speed Panchro range of prime lenses which are used for 35mm cinematography. He returned to New Hampshire in 1996 after the successful completion of his secondment. After the sale of the Cooke Division, Gerchman rejoined his colleagues in the new firm of Cooke Optics Limited as chief optical designer. Gerchman telecommutes from his home and visits the UK monthly. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded him a 2000 Prime Time Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in engineering development.
