One of the theatre's most honored actresses, Harris won her first Tony® Award in 1966 for The Lion in Winter. She has been nominated for Best Actress in a Play seven other times. Nominated in 2000 for Waiting in the Wings, the Award was won by her daughter Jennifer Ehle (b. 1969) for the revival of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing. In SUNSHINE (1999), Ehle played the younger version of Harris's character on film. Harris was married to director Ellis Rabb from 1959 until 1967. She married North Carolina author John Ehle in 1967. Harris is on the faculty of LAMDA as a teacher of acting.
