Born in Philadelphia, PA; educated at Brandeis University. Production executive of film and television who has also written and directed. He began in American television as a producer (w. Edward Zwick) and director of the Emmy®-winning series "Family" (1976-1980). He won 1988 and 1989 DGA Awards for Outstanding Directiorial Achievement in Dramatic Shows - Night for "thirtysomething" (1987-1991), and won Emmys in 1988 and 1989 and was nominated for a 1991 Emmy for the series (as co-executive producer w. Edward Zwick). He and Zwick shared a 1989 Writers Guild Award for the pilot episode of "thirtysomething." His TV series producing credits include "My So-Called Life" (1994), "Relativity" (1996) and "Once and Again" (1999).
In film, Herskovitz directed JACK THE BEAR (1993) and DANGEROUS BEAUTY (1998, also producer). Writing credits include "America: A Tribute to Heroes" (2001, TV) and THE LAST SAMURAI (2003, also producer). He produced LEGENDS OF THE FALL (1994), EXECUTIVE SEARCH (1999), TRAFFIC (2000), I AM SAM (2001), LONE STAR STATE OF MIND (2002), THE LAST SAMURAI (2003), BLOOD DIAMOND (2006), and the 2008 TV series "Quarterlife".
