Educated at Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI: BA, 1968). Production designer who entered American film in 1979 as a project consultant for HARDCORE. Other early credits include TENDER MERCIES (1983, art director), RACING WITH THE MOON (1984, set decorator), and BLOW OUT (1981) and CAT PEOPLE (1982) (both set designer). Other notable production design credits include THE BIG EASY (1987), IRONWEED (1988), MUSIC BOX (1989), WHITE PALACE (1990), SCHOOL TIES (1992), THE VANISHING (1993), CORRINA, CORRINA (1994), LOSING ISAIAH and THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (both 1995), PRIMAL FEAR (1996), SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS (1999), WONDER BOYS (2000), DIAL 9 FOR LOVE (2001), THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, WAKING UP IN RENO and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (all 2002), SEABISCUIT (2003), THE GOOD SHEPHERD (2006), and THE HAPPENING (scheduled for release in 2008).
