Born in Hong Kong. After his graduation in Filmmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1983, he directed his first feature WU DU QING CHOU / MISTY (1992). Pau works with the top directors such as John Woo (THE KILLER, 1989), Tsui Hark (DOUBLE TEAM, LOVE IN THE TIME OF TWILIGHT, THE CHINESE FEAST), Ronny Yu (BRIDE WITH THE WHITE HAIR, 1993; BRIDE OF CHUCKY, 1998; THE PHANTOM LOVER, 1995; WARRIORS OF VIRTUE, 1997) and Patrick Lussier (DRACULA 2000).
His collaboration with Ang Lee on WO HU CANG LONG / CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000), with poetic style in lighting and stunning camera moves, made him the first Hong Kong cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscar®. He won seven major US critics' awards for the film - including the Academy Award®. With five awards for best cinematography at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Pau's cinematography has received 18 nominations among over 30 features during his years of filmmaking. Recent notable credits include SIU CHAN CHAN / AND I HATE YOU SO (2000), BAK GING LOK JUE LIU / BEIJING ROCKS (2001), RU HUO · AI / PERHAPS LOVE and WU JI THE PROMISE (both 2005), SHOOT 'EM UP (2007), and THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (2008). Pau also directed TIAN MAI CHUAN QI / THE TOUCH (2002), and he's slated to helm MULAN (announced for release in 2008).
