Born Alexander Papadoupoulos in Omaha, Nebraska; attended Creighton Prep High School; studied Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca, Spain; graduate of Stanford University and UCLA Filmschool (MFA, Theatre Arts, 1990). With his writing partner Jim Taylor, creator of some of the most innovative and unconventional screenplays in recently released films: INSIDE OUT (1992, video), CITIZEN RUTH (1996), ELECTION (1999), JURASSIC PARK III (2001), ABOUT SCHMIDT (2002) and SIDEWAYS (2004). Payne wrote, produced and directed THE PASSION OF MARTIN (1991). Other producing credits include THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON (2004, exec. prod.), GRAY MATTERS (2006, exec. prod.), THE SAVAGES (2007, exec. prod.) and KING OF CALIFORNIA (also 2007). Payne wrote and directed the "14th arrondissement" segment of PARIS, JE T'AIME (2006), and he wrote the screenplay (w. Taylor) for I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY (2007).

Known for setting his films in and around Omaha, NE, Payne is divorced from actress Sandra Oh, whom he featured in SIDEWAYS.
