Born in Haslemere, England, UK. Started composing on the piano at age 13. Composed music for film and TV since 1982, mostly for television until the late 80s. Her feature film scoring credits include PRIVILEGED (student film at Oxford which starred fellow student Hugh Grant) (1982), LAST DAY OF SUMMER (1984), 90 DEGREES SOUTH (1987), HIGH HOPES (1988), LIFE IS SWEET (1990), REBECCA'S DAUGHTERS and USED PEOPLE (both 1992), BENNY & JOON, FRIENDS, THE JOY LUCK CLUB and ETHAN FROME (all 1993), SIRENS and THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE (both 1994), A PYROMANIAC'S LOVE STORY, SMOKE, PALOOKAVILLE and TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! Portman became the first female composer to win an Oscar® with her score for EMMA (1996). Since 1995, she has been married to writer/producer Uberto Pasolini. They have three daughters.
