Born in Pasadena, CA. Other writing credits include THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER (1987), THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER (1990), BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991, story), TOY STORY (1995, story) and A BUG'S LIFE (1998, story), TOY STORY 2 (1999, story supervisor), MONSTERS, INC. (2001, add'l story mat'l) and MIKE'S NEW CAR (2002 - special thanks). He also worked storysketch for WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988), and he was storyboard supervisor for TIM BURTON'S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993) and JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (1996). Ranft voiced several characters in the above animated films: Elmo St. Peters in THE BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER, Lenny the Binoculars in TOY STORY, Heimlich the Caterpillar in A BUG'S LIFE, Wheezy the Penguin in TOY STORY 2 and Streetsquash Rabbit in MONKEYBONE (2001). At the time of his death in an automobile crash in 2005, Ranft was head of Pixar's story department.
