Dr. Douglas R. Roble

At Digital Domain, Roble devised motion tracking software (called TRACK) that allowed live-action camera crews to be more spontaneous and not so worried about what might happen later at the computer workstation or in the motion-control studio. Instead, they could concentrate on their immediate real-world problems. "I was right out of school, and this was my introduction to visual-effects business," says Roble. "I was one of the first 30 people that Digital Domain hired. My program was based on some of the theoretical stuff I had been working on in my Ph.D. at Ohio State University, but at that time, no one had tried to apply this kind of approach to an actual project."

Technical Achievement Award (Academy Certificate) 1998: For his contribution to tracking technology and for the design and implementation of the TRACK system for camera position calculation and scene reconstruction.
Scientific and Engineering Award (Academy Plaque) 2007: For the development of the fluid simulation system at Digital Domain. (w. Nafees Bin Zafar and Ryo Sakaguchi, also of Digital Domain)
